How Long It Takes

A lot of Franklin's garages went up well after the older suburbs closer to Brookfield, with a median build year around 1989. That means you're mostly looking at steel sectional doors with factory-baked panel sections rather than the older wood or single-piece doors you'd find in a 1960s neighborhood. A single damaged panel on one of these doors - the kind you get from a trailer hitch backing in wrong or a winter ice shove off the eave - is usually a half-day job once the right panel is on the truck. If the whole run of panels has gone soft from age or the color is faded enough that a patch would stand out, we're looking at a full day to pull the old sections and rehang new ones on the existing track. We tell you which one you're dealing with before we start, not after we've already pulled a panel loose.

Doing It Yourself

Swapping a single panel on a sectional door looks simple from a video, and on paper it kind of is - unbolt the end hinges, slide the section out, slide the new one in. Where it goes wrong is matching the panel. Doors from the late 80s and 90s came in enough color runs and rib profiles that a panel ordered off a generic part number often doesn't match the embossing on the rest of the door, and you end up with a visible seam. There's also the torsion spring sitting under tension a few feet away - if you're not used to winding bars, leave that part alone. We're honest that the panel swap itself isn't the hard part; getting the right panel is.

What the Repair Takes

Once we've got the matching panel, the job is mechanical: support the door, pull the roller brackets and hinges off the damaged section, lift it out, set the new one in, re-hang hardware, and check the door runs true on both tracks before we tension anything back up. On a double-wide door - common across Franklin's newer builds - we also check that the center stile between sections is seated right, since that's the spot that takes the most racking stress on a wider opening. We test the opener's force settings after, because a new panel changes the weight balance slightly and an opener left on old settings will either strain the motor or not latch the safety reverse correctly.

What Can Go Wrong

The panel itself is rarely the whole story. If a hard hit bent the section enough to crack it, it usually tweaked the roller track behind it too, and a track that's out of true will chew through the new panel's rollers in a season if we don't straighten or replace that section of track at the same time. On doors from this era we also sometimes find the original hinges have worn oval holes from twenty-plus years of cycling, which we flag rather than bolt a new panel to worn hardware and call it done. One honest limit: if the door's a discontinued color run or an odd width and the manufacturer's stopped stocking matching panels, replacement of the whole door is usually cheaper and faster than hunting a matching section.

How to Book

We run this job out of Brookfield, about 14 miles from Franklin, so we schedule panel jobs here in batches rather than same-day drop-ins. Tell us the door's brand and approximate age when you call, and ideally a photo of the damage and the door's data plate if you can get to it - that's what lets us order the right panel before the truck heads out instead of showing up to measure twice. See our page on areas near Franklin for the rest of what we cover out this way, or check general panel pricing and process on the main panel replacement page.

What You Pay

We don't publish a flat number for panel work because the cost swings on two things: how many sections need replacing, and whether your door's color and rib pattern are still in production. A single matched panel on a common steel door is the cheapest version of this job; a full re-panel on a faded or discontinued run costs more because we're sourcing a full new set rather than one section. Franklin's housing stock, newer than a lot of what we cover closer to Brookfield, usually still has parts in active production, which works in your favor here compared to some of the older-stock suburbs on our list.

Frequently asked questions

Will a new panel match the rest of my door's color?

If your door's still in production, yes, close enough that it won't stand out. If it's an older run from the late 80s or 90s that's been discontinued, an exact match isn't always possible, and we'll tell you that before ordering rather than after.

Do you install same day in Franklin?

We run out of Brookfield, about 14 miles away, so Franklin panel jobs get scheduled rather than handled as same-day drop-ins. Call with the door's brand and age and we'll get you a slot.

Is it cheaper to replace one panel or the whole door?

One panel is cheaper if the part is still made and the rest of the door is sound. If the color run is discontinued or more than one section is damaged, a full door often ends up costing less than hunting down matching old panels.
